The Turbo 400 tranny in 74 Z28's has an electronic shift regulator, unlike a Turbo 350 that uses vacuum to shift the tranny . The switch is mounted behind your gas pedal under the dash. Has two wires. maybe one of the wires is loose or the switch is fubar.

Nothing wrong with a V6. Especially at todays gas prices. Really it all depends on what you do with your car . daily driver, I'd keep the V6. Drive it once in awhile a V8 would be my choice . Restoring a 74 Z28 Lots of work still to do , mostly bodywork and paint.
Trailered the car down from Lillooet last November. The car had been sitting for 12 years.
I'll post pics from time to time on the progress :)
