All About The 1975 Camaro
Dealer Introduction Date: 09/27/1974

Chevy temporarily killed the Z28 starting in 1975. Some say that this was due to the fact that a catalytic converter was required this year and Camaro lovers at the division felt they could not build a true performance car with a converter-clogged exhaust system. Others say it was simply a bad marketing decision — bad because Pontiac stuck with the Trans Am and it sold great. The Camaro Z28 model would return in mid-1977.

The ninth annual edition of the Camaro continued with a good-looking design dominated by a low profile, a wide stance and a sloping rear deck. The '75 models also got a new wraparound rear window to reduce a blind spot that had troubled many drivers. A new RS option with multi-color paint schemes and bold stripes returned in mid-1975. There was also a rare factory interior selection that was the only leather upholstery option offered for first- or second-generation Camaro's.

A breakerless HEI ignition system was standard on all 1975 Camaro's as were radial tires. You could get air conditioning in a I-6 engine equipped Camaro this year and power door locks were a new option.

Sixteen paint colors were offered in 1975. New ones included Light Gray and Medium Orange.

The appearance changed a little on the 1975 version: a larger, wraparound rear window style was added.

A catalytic converter was added to the Camaro in 1975 making unleaded gas a necessity.

1975 Camaro Model Year Facts

A/C (Air Conditioning) was now available with I-6 Camaro's.
The RPO Z28 special performance package, available with all Camaro's since 1967, was discontinued in the 1975 Camaro model year. However, the option did appear in early Chevrolet dealer ordering information, and Chevrolet records show that one (1) 1975 Z28 was built. It's unknown if this single vehicle was sold to a retail customer, or was for prototype purposes only. More likely than not will NEVER see this 1975 Camaro Z28 so if someone says they have a 1975 Camaro Z28 or see one for sale or on auction, you can guarentee this is NOT TRUE.
This was the year that the Camaro was required to use unleaded fuel. With that came "unleaded fuel only" decals, a restricted fuel filler neck, and a screw-on fuel cap.
Radial tires, optional in 1974 Camaro model year, became standard equipment in the 1975 Camaro model year. But bias-belted tires could be ordered as delete-cost options.
Power door locks became optional in 1975. Cruise control, not available as a factory-installed option since the 1968 Camaro model year, was listed as optional in 1975, but Chevrolet sales records do not indicate any installations. Also, a fuel economy light to measure engine vacuum changes was planned as an instrument option, but was cancelled.
The 1975 Camaro model years styling was a carryover from the previous year, except that the rear window was a larger, wrap-around design to reduce the "blind spot" rear vision problem inherent in 1970-1974 Camaro model years.
The Rally Sport option was not available at the start of 1975 production, but did return at midyear as RPO Z85. Unlike previous Rally Sport packages, this one did not feature the hidden headlamps of the first generation, or the snout grill of the second; rather, it was a distinctive paint and stripe package.
New for the 1975 Camaro model year were finned rear brake drums.
1975 V8 Camaro's received twin exhaust tail pipes.
The 1975 Camaro model year was the first year to receive a newly invented device for handling unspent fuel emissions, the catalytic converter. Because of the great cost to install 2 catalytic converters under the car, only one (1) catalytic converter were to be installed under the Camaro.
New radios were offered for the 1975 Camaro model year.
New Deep pile carpet added to the 1975 Camaro model year.
HEI (High-Energy Ignition) was now standard on all engines.
Big LT change was using birdseye maple woodgrain instead of meridian walnut.
Landau roof debut
Sports Decor (Z08) introduced in 1975, but then was withdrawn in the mid season of 1975.
The ONLY time in which the ENTIRE Camaro product Generation (2nd Generation 1970 - 1981) in which there were NO Convertible body styles offered.
