All About The
1977 Camaro
Dealer Introduction Date:
09/30/1976
Does excitement sell automobiles? It must, if the 1977 Camaro model year is any example. In the middle of the year, Chevrolet brought back the Z28 (the "/" in "Z/28" was dropped starting this year) to stir up enthusiasts and production zoomed to 218,853 units.
The new version of the "Z" was merchandised as a separate model, although it was factory coded as an option for the base Camaro. It did not have an exclusive engine like earlier Z28s, but the badges, stripes and decals made it look exciting and a heavy-duty suspension setup made for some heart-racing road manners. The 15x7 rims were now body-colored rather than the stock "grey" ones that were standard with the Z28 and only color available.
The Camaro changed little for 1977. When the new models were introduced in the fall the lineup included the standard Camaro Sport Coupe and the upscale Camaro Type LT (or Luxury Touring edition). The familiar 250-cid I-6 engine was the standard engine for 1977 Camaro's.
Options included a 305-cid V8 and a 350-cid V8.
Transmission choices ranged from a standard 3-speed manual gearbox, to 4-speed manual gearbox to a Turbo-Hydra-Matic transmission.
The standard axle ratio for both V8's with automatic changed from 2.73:1 to 2.56:1 to help boost fuel economy. The 4-speed transmission shift pattern was revised and reverse gear was now engaged by a rearward (toward the driver) lifting motion, rather than forward as before.
A new refillable carbon-dioxide canister replaced the disposable freon-filled unit used to inflate the Stowaway spare tire.
Intermittent windshield wipers joined the Camaro's option list and all models had Hide-A-Way windshield wipers.

Facts
For the first time, the "/" in "Z/28" was finally dropped and was now know and written as "Z28" rather than "Z/28".
In 1977, the 4-speed manual transmissions were not certified for sale in California.
Shifting action and ease of service for both 3- and 4-speed manual transmissions was improved by redesign of the pivot point mechanism.
1977 was the first Camaro model year where intermittent wipers were optional, and the previously optional hidden wipers (RPO C24) were standard with all models.
The Z28 returned as a mid-year release in 1977, after being unavailable since 1975. Unlike before, when it was an option, the Z28 reintroduced in 1977 was a separate model. But it could not be combined with the Rally Sport option, or with the Type LT which was itself a separate model. A 350ci engine was standard for the 1977 Z28. Its power rating was 185hp, except for 175hp in California. The Z28s also had Borg-Warner 4-speed-manual transmissions (replacing the Saginaw-type), heavy-duty clutches, and dual-resonator exhaust systems.
For the 1977 Camaro model year, the reverse position for the 4-speed manual shift lever was relocated from the far left forward position to the rearward position. Since the reverse lockout mechanism required the shift lever to be lifted, the rearward movement was thought to be more natural.
For the 1977 Camaro model year, the use-it-once Freon inflation can for the space saver spare tire (RPO N65) was changed in 1977 to a carbon dioxide refillable type.
For 1977, the LT offered bright new woven-cloth upholstery instead of the plaid material previously used; vinyl continued as an alternative.
The ONLY time in which the ENTIRE Camaro product Generation (2nd Generation 1970 - 1981) in which there were NO Convertible body styles offered.
Z28 15X7 rims were now body-colored.
