Historical Footnotes On The 1977 Camaro

Top racing drivers who piloted Camaro's in the IROC (International Race of Champions) Series in 1977 included Benny Parsons, Brian Redman, James Hunt, Richard Petty, Jody Scheckter, A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Bobby Allison, Al Unser and David Pearson.

For the 1977 Camaro model year, sales climbed. Model-year production of 218,853 Camaro's included 31,389 6-cylinder (I-6) models and 187,464 Camaro V8 engines. This model-year production at Van Nuys was higher than production at Norwood. Industry trade journals reported that the California plant built 153,671 Camaro's and the Ohio factory built 65,183 Camaro's. (In addition, all 155,736 Firebirds made in 1977 were built at Norwood.) Camaro sales for model-year 1977 came to 198,755 units. Camaro sales for calendar-year 1977 came to 208,511 for a 2.3% market share.

Of the Camaro's built, 89.8% had automatic transmission, 6.2% had a 4-speed manual transmission, 14.3% were equipped with an I-6 (Inline 6-cylinder) engine, 6.6% were equipped with a standard V8 engine, and 79.1% were equipped with an optional V8 engine.

100% (All) had power steering, 4.9% had manual disc brakes, 95.1% had power disc brakes, 8% had a limited-slip differential, 93.5% had radial tires, 9.2% had power door locks, 14.2% had power windows, 100% (All) had bucket seats, 2% had a tinted windshield (only), 83% had all-tinted glass, 66.1% had manual air conditioning, 9% had a vinyl top, 31.0% had an AM radio, 15% had an AM/FM radio, 10% had an AM/FM stereo radio, 14% had a stereo tape player, 58% had an analog clock, 33% had a rear window defogger, 94% had a remote-control outside rear-view mirror, 11.5% had cruise control, 12.4% had a tachometer, 7.4% had delay-type windshield wipers, 100% (All) had electronic ignition, 10% had optional wheel covers and 79% had styled wheels.

A total of 199,186 new Camaro's were registered in the U.S. during calendar year 1977.
