On The
1980 Camaro
This year the rising popularity of small cars combined with an auto industry downturn put a pinch on Chevrolet's business. The Camaro suffered mightily as its model-year sales declined from 233,802 in 1979 to 131,066 in 1980.
Calendar-year sales wound up at 116,824 (a 1.8% share of industry). Trade journals of the era listed model-year production of 152,005 Camaro's in tables showing production by series and engine, by engine or by body style. However, the same sources listed production of a slightly higher 152,021 units when broken out by model year or by factory of origin. The engine breakouts given in such sources were 51,104 V6 Camaro's and 100,901 Camaro V8 engines, or 152,005 total cars. However, the trade journals recorded the Van Nuys, California, plant as building 84,178 Camaro's (and 57,912 Firebirds) and the Norwood, Ohio, factory as building 67,303 Camaro's (and 49,428 Firebirds). That means Camaro numbers by factory total 152,021. The figures used by most enthusiasts show production by each of the 4 Camaro model-options and total 152,005.
Of the Camaro's built, 87.3% had automatic transmission, 8.1% had a 4-speed manual transmission, 33.6% were equipped with a V6 engine, and 66.4% were equipped with a V8 engine.
100% (All) had power steering, 3.8% had manual disc brakes, 96.2% had power disc brakes, 11.6% had a limited-slip differential, 100% (All) had steel-belted radial tires, 18.1% had power door locks, 29.4% had power windows, 100% (All) had bucket seats, 2.3% had a tinted windshield only, 85.9% had all-tinted glass, 70.5% had manual air conditioning, 52.3% had tilt steering, 25.1% had cruise control, 0 (None) had a vinyl top, 24.6% had an AM radio, 10.1% had an AM/FM radio, 14.5% had an AM/FM stereo radio, 1.1% had an AM 8-track tape player, 12% had an AM/FM 8-track tape player, 10.1% had an AM/FM cassette player. 0.3% had an AM/FM stereo with a CB radio, 59.4% had a analog clock, 0.2% had a digital clock, 51.3% had an electric rear window defogger. 97% had a remote-control outside rear-view mirror, 18.6% had optional wheel covers, 17.2% had aluminum styled wheels, 61.6% had styled steel wheels and 16.3% had T-tops.
A total of 117,164 new Camaro's were registered in the U.S. during calendar year 1980. That was down from 203,904 in 1979 and 251,983 in 1978.
