On The
1981 Camaro
The 1981 Camaro line was introduced on Sept. 25, 1980. Robert D. Lund was general manager of Chevrolet Motor Division in 1980, but would pass the title on to Robert G. Stempel by 1982. Lund then joined the General Motors Sales and Marketing Staff. Chevrolet projected a sales increase for 1981, but failed to realize its goal. The Camaro's popularity deteriorated further, with model year sales sliding from 131,066 in 1980 to 109,707 in 1981. That was a 17.9% decline, which was attributed to the fact that the basic Camaro body was 11 years old and that its technology was out of step with modern times. A racy-looking Camaro with all-new styling and engineering was in the works for 1982.
Calendar-year sales wound up at 94,606 (a 1.5% share of industry). Model-year production was 126,138 Camaro's, although some sources show 126,139 (1 production unit more). The Camaro earned a 1.89% share of the industry total. The Van Nuys, California, plant reported building 86,126 Camaro's (and 45,098 Firebirds). The Norwood, Ohio, factory reported building 40,012 Camaro's (and 25,801 Firebirds). Of the Camaro's built, 87% had automatic transmission, 8.5% had a 4-speed manual transmission, 41.2% were equipped with a 6-cylinder engine, and 58.8% were equipped with a V8 engine.
100% (All) had power steering, 100% (All) had power front disc brakes, 9.6% had a limited-slip differential, 100% (All) had steel-belted radial tires, 19.6% had power door locks, 30.5% had power windows, 86.8% had non-reclining bucket seats, 13.2% had reclining bucket seats, 1% had a tinted windshield only, 89.5% had all-tinted glass, 76.2% had manual air conditioning, 59.8% had tilt steering, 32.4% had cruise control, 19.8% had an AM radio, 6.6% had an AM/FM radio, 20.6% had an AM/FM stereo radio, 6.5% had an AM/FM 8-track tape player, 18.8% had an AM/FM cassette player, 0.2% had an AM/FM stereo with a CB radio, 59% had a analog clock, 47.6% had an electric rear window defogger, 97.8% had a remote-control outside rear-view mirror, 16% had optional wheel covers, 24.7% had aluminum styled wheels, 57% had styled steel wheels and 24.1% had T-tops.
A total of 93,706 new Camaro's were registered in the U.S. during calendar year 1981. That was down from 117,164 in 1980.
